The Program
Bay Oral Surgery & Implant Center is pleased to announce the return of Salute to Smiles, a program designed to connect area dentists with military backgrounds and local veterans in order to provide necessary dental procedures. Salute to Smiles began in 2015 and was inspired by Bay Oral Surgery’s three ex-military oral surgeons, Dr. David LeMoine, Dr. Bradley Koch, and Dr. Charles Ellis as a way to give back to area veterans. Once again this year, 6 veterans will receive much needed dental care at no charge as a result of this program.
Unfortunately, many veterans cannot afford the dental care they need. As a result, they can suffer from health complications due to missing teeth – such as bone deterioration in the jaw and malnourishment from the inability to chew nutritious foods. Salute to Smiles doesn’t just restore the dental health of these veterans, but it also restores their confidence by giving them their smile back!

March 6th is National Dentist Day. From boosting your confidence to relieving your pain, here are six reasons to thank your dentist today!
- Help Maintain Your Good Oral Health
Regular dental check-ups and cleanings lead to good oral health. When you have regular examinations, your dentist can provide advice that is specific to your needs. Make sure to follow your dentist’s instructions on how to maintain your oral health in between check-ups.
- Protect Your Teeth
Your dentist has the tools and knowledge to help you keep your teeth strong and healthy. Ask your dentist how you can protect your teeth from acidic foods, stains, and wear down!
- Relieve Your Pain.
When you have a toothache, your dentist is your first responder. Your dentist is trained to minimize any pain or discomfort. For that, we can say thank you.
- Prevent and spot early signs of gum disease and oral cancer
Your dentist is trained to spot the early signs of gum disease and oral cancer before they spread. By scheduling regular dental check-ups and monitoring your oral health, you may be prolonging your life!
- Fix Your Smile
Life happens, and sometimes that means something can happen to your smile like a knocked-out tooth. If you happen to lose a tooth, your dentist can still save it. Put the tooth in milk to give it calcium and keep it moist and get to your dentist within 30 minutes. Your dentist will be able to save your smile by either reinserting the tooth, or creating a prosthetic one. No matter which route is taken, your smile will remain bright and full thanks to your dentist!
- Boost Your Overall Confidence
A brighter and healthier smile can lead to a huge confidence boost. It is said that in social interactions, the first place people look is the eyes, and then the teeth. This is why your dentist is the perfect person to give you a confidence boost. Your dentist can fix flaws like chipped, discolored, misshapen or missing teeth.
Happy National Dentist Day, and don’t forget to thank your dentist today for helping to maintain your beautiful smile!

From January 7th to 15th, Dr. Jason LeMoine was accompanied by his father, Dr. David LeMoine, and son T.J. to Nicaragua where they joined forces with Global Brigades.
Global Brigades is the largest student-led nonprofit organization, was 2015’s top rated nonprofit, and has membership from all over North America and Europe. With Global Brigades, the LeMoines offered their services in mobile dental clinics directly within the rural community where they were given the opportunity to evaluate patients in order to provide necessary care and medication. While both local and foreign dentists provide dental care to patients, unlicensed volunteers are able to participate in tasks such as instrument sterilization, post-op care instructions, shadowing dentists during procedures, and conducting children’s educational workshops on dental care.
At the end of each day, the team was given the opportunity to break into groups and reflect on the significant impact that their work has brought to the community. Dr. David LeMoine described the experience as “a great opportunity to serve in a developing country in extreme need, and the participation of dentists from the Fox Valley and Green Bay was wonderful.” In addition to Nicaragua, Global Brigades has programs in Honduras, Panama, and Ghana that assist in dental, business development, medical, and environmental needs.

Good oral and dental hygiene will help prevent tooth decay, bad breath and gum disease, but did you also know that good oral care can help prevent other diseases and conditions, and that a dentist can often spot a health problem before you even know it exists? Research is showing there are plenty of reasons to brush, floss and see a dentist beyond a healthy smile.
Without proper dental hygiene practices, bacteria from the mouth could spread through the bloodstream and cause endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart. Some research also suggests that cardiovascular disease may also be linked to inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause. Gum disease has also been linked to low birth weights and premature births in pregnant women. (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2016)
Conversely, your dentist can sometimes spot health problems with you or a loved one before you know you have them such as dementia, osteoporosis, heart problems, diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD and even eating disorders. (Everyday Health, 2013) This makes regular dental visits even more valuable!
Seeing a dentist twice a year should be a part of everyone’s overall health plan, not just for a healthy mouth and smile, but also for a healthy body. Between dental visits, you can ensure you’re doing your part by:
- Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Flossing daily
- Eating a balance diet and limiting sugar intake
- Avoiding tobacco use
We can’t stress the importance of good dental hygiene enough, and recommend seeing your dentist twice a year in conjunction with proper home care. Your health and well-being is important to us. If you don’t already have a dentist, or are looking for a new dentist, you can trust us to help you find one of the top dentists in the area by going to our referring dentist page.

Salute to Smiles began in 2015 and once again this year, 6 veterans will receive dental care at no charge as a result of this program. We’re especially excited for this year’s program because we have our first female veteran participating. Salute to Smiles 2016 was kicked off with an event hosted by John Maino, a veteran himself. The event provided an opportunity for the veterans of last year’s program to meet the veterans of this year’s program as well as the surgeons, dentists and sponsors of Salute To Smiles. Each veteran will then begin his or her care plan, and the necessary dental and oral surgery procedures will take place over the next 4-6 months.

The ability to manage stress, emotions and conflict is important in all industries, but it’s even more critical in the medical industry because patients can be fearful of procedures, concerned with insurance coverage and payment options and already dealing with additional medical issues that could compound his or her stress level.
As medical professionals, we cannot not take this stress personally or allow it to create conflict within our practice. We understand this can be very challenging which is why we are hosting a city-wide wellness symposium for area dental professionals. Our goal is to not only learn how to better manage stress and conflict ourselves, but also to share this knowledge with the dental community of Northeast Wisconsin to benefit all oral surgery patients in Green Bay.
At this City-Wide Wellness Symposium, the following presenters will share their knowledge with dental professionals, administrative and clinical team members:
- Employee Resource Center Presents: Resolving Conflict & Emotional Intelligence
- Bellin Health Presents: Managing Stress & Mindfulness / Meditation in the Workplace
Bay Oral is not only committed to the health of dental patients in Northeast Wisconsin, but also to the wellness of the area’s dental community. You can read more about the event at www.bayoralwellness.com. For updates and photos of the event, stay tuned to our Facebook page.
