World No Tobacco Day – 5 Steps to Help You Quit

World No Tobacco Day – 5 Steps to Help You Quit

Today is “World No Tobacco Day.”  Not only does tobacco usage have an impact on your lungs, it also has a detrimental impact on your oral health. Some effects that tobacco use has on your mouth are:smoking, how-to-quit-smoking

  • Brown/black staining of the teeth
  • Increased risk of tooth decay and tooth loss
  • Bad breath
  • Impaired taste buds
  • Black hairy tongue
  • Periodontitis- infected gums, loss of the jawbone that supports your teeth, and deep spaces forming around the teeth
  • Brown spots on your gums
  • Mouth and throat cancer
  • Impaired healing of the gums and bones in your mouth

Users of chewing tobacco and snuff are at an especially high risk of oral cancers. (Especially cancers of the gums, cheeks, lips, tongue, floor and roof of your mouth.)

According to the Institute of Medicine about 80% of people diagnosed with oral cancer are tobacco users and tobacco use contributes to about 490,000 premature deaths per year, making it the leading cause of death. This is more than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders, fires, and suicides combined.

If cancer is not yet present, stopping tobacco use halves the risk of oral and throat cancer within the first five years and continues to decline over time. Curious how you can quit using tobacco? This article shares five steps to help curb your addiction.

In honor of World No Tobacco Day, remember to consider the effects that tobacco usage may have on your health and those around you before you smoke or chew. It isn’t too late to turn the effects of tobacco around and significantly decrease your risk of cancer.

2016/2017 Salute to Smiles Program

2016/2017 Salute to Smiles Program

The Program

Bay Oral Surgery & Implant Center is pleased to announce the return of Salute to Smiles, a program designed to connect area dentists with military backgrounds and local veterans in order to provide necessary dental procedures. Salute to Smiles began in 2015 and was inspired by Bay Oral Surgery’s three ex-military oral surgeons, Dr. David LeMoine, Dr. Bradley Koch, and Dr. Charles Ellis as a way to give back to area veterans. Once again this year, 6 veterans will receive much needed dental care at no charge as a result of this program.

Unfortunately, many veterans cannot afford the dental care they need. As a result, they can suffer from health complications due to missing teeth – such as bone deterioration in the jaw and malnourishment from the inability to chew nutritious foods. Salute to Smiles doesn’t just restore the dental health of these veterans, but it also restores their confidence by giving them their smile back!

6 Reasons to Thank Your Dentist on National Dentist Day

6 Reasons to Thank Your Dentist on National Dentist Day

National Dentist Day

March 6th is National Dentist Day. From boosting your confidence to relieving your pain, here are six reasons to thank your dentist today!

  1. Help Maintain Your Good Oral Health
Regular dental check-ups and cleanings lead to good oral health. When you have regular examinations, your dentist can provide advice that is specific to your needs. Make sure to follow your dentist’s instructions on how to maintain your oral health in between check-ups.
  2. Protect Your Teeth
Your dentist has the tools and knowledge to help you keep your teeth strong and healthy. Ask your dentist how you can protect your teeth from acidic foods, stains, and wear down!
  3. Relieve Your Pain.
When you have a toothache, your dentist is your first responder. Your dentist is trained to minimize any pain or discomfort. For that, we can say thank you.
  4. Prevent and spot early signs of gum disease and oral cancer
Your dentist is trained to spot the early signs of gum disease and oral cancer before they spread. By scheduling regular dental check-ups and monitoring your oral health, you may be prolonging your life!
  5. Fix Your Smile
Life happens, and sometimes that means something can happen to your smile like a knocked-out tooth. If you happen to lose a tooth, your dentist can still save it. Put the tooth in milk to give it calcium and keep it moist and get to your dentist within 30 minutes. Your dentist will be able to save your smile by either reinserting the tooth, or creating a prosthetic one. No matter which route is taken, your smile will remain bright and full thanks to your dentist!
  6. Boost Your Overall Confidence
A brighter and healthier smile can lead to a huge confidence boost. It is said that in social interactions, the first place people look is the eyes, and then the teeth. This is why your dentist is the perfect person to give you a confidence boost. Your dentist can fix flaws like chipped, discolored, misshapen or missing teeth.

Happy National Dentist Day, and don’t forget to thank your dentist today for helping to maintain your beautiful smile!

Bay Oral Joins Global Brigades

Bay Oral Joins Global Brigades

From January 7th to 15th, Dr. Jason LeMoine was accompanied by his father, Dr. David LeMoine, and son T.J. to Nicaragua where they joined forces with Global Brigades.

LeMoine Family Global Brigades

Global Brigades is the largest student-led nonprofit organization, was 2015’s top rated nonprofit, and has membership from all over North America and Europe. With Global Brigades, the LeMoines offered their services in mobile dental clinics directly within the rural community where they were given the opportunity to evaluate patients in order to provide necessary care and medication. While both local and foreign dentists provide dental care to patients, unlicensed volunteers are able to participate in tasks such as instrument sterilization, post-op care instructions, shadowing dentists during procedures, and conducting children’s educational workshops on dental care.

Global Bridages Nicaragua Team

At the end of each day, the team was given the opportunity to break into groups and reflect on the significant impact that their work has brought to the community. Dr. David LeMoine described the experience as “a great opportunity to serve in a developing country in extreme need, and the participation of dentists from the Fox Valley and Green Bay was wonderful.” In addition to Nicaragua, Global Brigades has programs in Honduras, Panama, and Ghana that assist in dental, business development, medical, and environmental needs.
